Importing a robot from China into Western markets requires understanding which certifications your market demands, which Chinese manufacturers have them, and what your responsibilities are as the importer. This guide covers the three certification frameworks that matter most: CE marking for Europe, UL listing for North America, and ISO safety standards globally.
CE marking (European Economic Area)
CE marking is a legal requirement for selling or operating industrial machinery (including robots) in the EU, EEA, and several other countries that recognize CE. It indicates conformity with EU health, safety, and environmental directives.
What it covers for cobots: The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC is the primary directive. Robots must also comply with the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) and EMC Directive (2014/30/EU).
Which Chinese brands have CE: DOBOT (CRA series, Nova series), UFACTORY (xArm series), FAIRINO (FR series), AUBO (i-series), JAKA (Zu series), Elite Robot (EC series), and Elephant Robotics all carry CE marking on their export models.
Your responsibility as importer: Even though the manufacturer applied the CE mark, you (as the importer or authorized representative) are responsible for ensuring the product meets all applicable directives. Request and keep on file the Declaration of Conformity (DoC) and technical documentation. If the manufacturer doesn't have an EU authorized representative, you take on that legal role.
UL listing (North America)
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification is not legally required for industrial robots in the United States — unlike CE in Europe, there's no federal mandate. However, many buyers, facility insurance policies, and some local building codes require or strongly prefer UL-listed equipment.
Current status: AUBO is the only major Chinese cobot brand with UL certification as of March 2026. This is a significant differentiator for North American buyers who need UL-listed equipment.
Alternatives to UL: NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory) certification from any OSHA-accepted lab — including CSA, ETL (Intertek), and TÜV — is equivalent to UL for workplace safety purposes. Some Chinese manufacturers are pursuing these alternative certifications.
Practical impact: Many US small businesses operate Chinese cobots without UL listing, relying on CE marking and risk assessments. This is generally acceptable for owned equipment in your own facility. It becomes more complex if you're reselling to customers who require UL or if your insurance specifically mandates it. Consult your insurance provider and local regulations.
ISO safety standards
Three ISO standards are particularly relevant for cobots. ISO 13849-1 covers safety-related parts of control systems — essentially, the cobot's safety controller. ISO 10218-1/2 covers robot safety requirements (Part 1 for the robot itself, Part 2 for the robot system integration). ISO/TS 15066 specifically addresses collaborative robot safety — force limits, speed limits, and separation monitoring.
DOBOT's CRA series is the only Chinese cobot line that currently certifies compliance with all three ISO standards (13849-1, 10218-1, and TS 15066). Other Chinese brands may meet these standards in practice but haven't completed formal certification.
Practical compliance checklist for importers
Before importing any Chinese robot, verify the specific model (not just the brand) carries the certifications your market requires. Request the original Declaration of Conformity and test reports. Confirm the CE/UL mark applies to the exact configuration you're ordering (including power supply voltage and plug type). Verify the robot's documentation, safety manual, and user interface are available in your language. Maintain all documentation for at least 10 years (EU requirement). If reselling, ensure you can provide certification documentation to your customers.
The bottom line
CE certification is well-covered by Chinese cobot manufacturers — most major brands export CE-marked products routinely. UL certification is the gap, with only AUBO currently certified. For North American buyers who need UL, AUBO is the clear choice. For everyone else, CE marking combined with ISO safety compliance (particularly from DOBOT's CRA series) provides a strong compliance foundation.
