Why the price is so hard to find
Three things happened between 2020 and 2026.
Boston Dynamics moved upmarket. Spot launched with a public price and an online order button aimed at developers and early adopters. As deployments concentrated in energy, utilities, mining, and construction, the sales model shifted to enterprise: qualified leads, scoped configurations, negotiated contracts.
Configuration variance exploded. With arms, thermal cameras, gas detectors, LiDAR payloads, docks, and tiered software licensing, there is no longer a single "a Spot" to price. Two customers can pay 2.5x different amounts for the same robot.
Competition changed the conversation. When a Unitree B2 delivers comparable physical capability at $76,900, publishing a $74,500 base price that becomes $194,500 configured invites an unflattering comparison. Quote-only pricing lets the sales conversation lead with capability rather than sticker.
What you actually get for the money
It is easy to look at the price gap and conclude Spot is overpriced. That is not quite right — it is precisely priced for a customer who is not buying a robot dog, but risk reduction.
Autonomy that works unsupervised. Spot's Autowalk and Orbit stack let it run repeated inspection routes without an operator, handling deviations, docking, and recharging on its own. This is the single biggest technical gap between Spot and its cheaper rivals, and it is what makes unattended daily inspection rounds viable.
Enterprise support infrastructure. Service contracts, guaranteed parts availability, trained integrators, and a vendor your compliance and procurement teams already recognise. On a refinery inspection contract, that matters more than top speed.
Deployment track record. Years of operating data across hazardous industrial environments, with the documentation, safety case history, and integration partners to match.
Payload ecosystem. A mature catalogue of certified sensors and mounts, with the software integration already solved.
Where Spot is hard to justify
Against that, the honest counter-case:
- It is slower and heavier than the Chinese competition — 1.6 m/s and 32 kg versus 3.5 m/s and 15 kg for a Go2 Pro.
- Research and education rarely need it. If the goal is teaching locomotion, testing perception algorithms, or prototyping, you are paying an enormous premium for autonomy software your project will replace with its own code anyway.
- Single-site, occasional inspection rarely amortises a six-figure deployment plus subscription.
- The arm is close to mandatory for most industrial use cases, so the real entry point is nearer $140,000 than $74,500.
Cheaper alternatives worth considering
Unitree B2 — $76,900. The closest genuine competitor for industrial work: 40 kg payload (versus Spot's 14 kg), 6 m/s, all-terrain, IP-rated. Less mature autonomy software and a thinner support network, but for inspection routes you are willing to supervise, it delivers most of the physical capability for less than half a configured Spot.
Unitree Go2 EDU — $11,190–$15,600. For research labs, algorithm development, and light inspection. Full SDK, ROS support, optional Jetson Orin compute. This is where most university robotics work should actually be happening.
Unitree Go2 Pro — $2,800. Not an industrial machine, but if the requirement is "demonstrate a quadruped" or "learn the platform before committing budget," it does that for roughly 1.5% of a Spot deployment.
How to decide
Buy Spot if you are running unattended, repeatable inspection routes in a hazardous or regulated industrial environment, you need vendor accountability and a support contract, and a six-figure capital budget with recurring subscription is realistic for you.
Buy a Unitree B2 if you need industrial-grade physical capability — payload, speed, terrain — and you can supervise operation or develop your own autonomy, with budget in the five figures rather than six.
Buy a Go2 EDU or Pro if this is research, education, prototyping, or evaluation. Nearly every lab that "needs a Spot" would be better served spending 10% of the budget on a Go2 EDU and the rest on the actual research.
The question is not which robot dog is best. It is whether you are buying mobility hardware or buying an outcome with a support contract attached — and Spot's price only makes sense if it is the second one.
